Sleep Tip: How to get your child to bed earlier

August 13, 2017

One of the most common questions we get from parents is how to get their baby or child to bed earlier. Did you know that the time you wake up in the morning affects the time you fall asleep? This is true of all humans, big and small. If your toddler’s bedtime is 7:30pm, her brain needs the sunlight, food, and activity of a morning that starts at about 6 or 6:30am.

If you’re shifting schedules (as we are) after a summer of late nights and sleeping in, start with wake up times. If your school age child needs to be up for school at 7:00am, he’ll do well with an 8 or 8:30pm bedtime. Shift to this schedule gradually, 15-30 minutes per day, and start with waking up earlier.

An early bedtime starts with an early wake time!

Wake up: 6:30am

Naps: 9am and 1pm

Bedtime: 7:00pm

Sample Sleep Schedule: 8-year-old

Wake up: 7:00am

Bedtime: 8:00pm (asleep by 8:15pm)
